Youth Discovered Deceased After False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One teenage boy was found dead only a few days after being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's parents found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Start
The inquest learned how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The message added: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my flat."
In a statement read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from police later concluded the alleged break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was never taken in the first place".
News coverage about the supposed taken ashes attracted online comments, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she stated.
Emotional Health Effect
She explained that her son had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her son told her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed online after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that one 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called the family's family telephone and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The court heard his family said they never got that message.
Official Conclusion
Lead coroner informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Likely untruths were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries proceeded."
The coroner concluded: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
